Why conversions drift through the year
A time zone is not a fixed number. Most of North America and Europe shift their clocks twice a year, but they do it on different dates — the United States changes in mid-March and early November, the European Union on the last Sundays of March and October. For a few weeks each year the usual gap between New York and London is five hours rather than the normal four. Zones that never shift at all, including India, Japan and Arizona, move relative to every zone that does.
Questions
- How do I convert a time between two time zones?
- Pick the zone the time is in, pick the zone you want it in, and enter the time. The converter applies the difference between the two zones' UTC offsets for that date and shows the result, flagging when the answer falls on the previous or next day.
- Why does the converted time sometimes land on a different day?
- Zones far apart can be more than a day's working hours out of step. 9:00 in New York is 23:00 the same day in Tokyo, but 20:00 in New York is 10:00 the next morning in Tokyo. The converter marks these with a +1d or −1d indicator rather than silently wrapping.
- Does it account for daylight saving time?
- Yes. Offsets are resolved for a specific date instead of being read from a fixed table, so a conversion in January and the same conversion in July can legitimately differ by an hour. Zones that never observe daylight saving, such as India, Arizona and Japan, shift relative to zones that do.
- What are half-hour and quarter-hour time zones?
- Not every zone is a whole number of hours from UTC. India is UTC+05:30, Nepal is UTC+05:45, and parts of Australia are UTC+09:30. The converter handles these exactly rather than rounding to the nearest hour.
